SASSA Status Meaning

Approved, Pending, and Declined Results Explained

When people check their SASSA status, the result can sometimes feel confusing. You might see messages like pending, approved, or declined, and it’s not always clear what those actually mean.

These status updates come from the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) and reflect the progress of your Social Relief of Distress (SRD) R370 grant application. Each message simply tells you where your application currently stands in the review process.

Many applicants notice that their status changes several times before a final decision is made. That’s normal. The system runs a series of checks before approving payments.

If you haven’t checked your grant yet, you can use the SASSA Status Check page to see the latest update on your application.

SASSA Status Pending Meaning

If your application shows pending, it means SASSA is still reviewing your information.

During this stage, several verification checks take place to confirm that the applicant meets the eligibility criteria for the SRD grant. These checks are part of the standard application process.

identity verification
income records
banking details
eligibility requirements

In many cases, the system also checks identity information with the Department of Home Affairs.

Many people notice that their status stays pending for a few days or even a couple of weeks. In most situations, there’s nothing you need to do. The best option is simply to wait while the verification process runs its course.

SASSA Approved Status Meaning

If your status changes to approved, that’s usually a good sign. It means your application has passed the required checks and you qualify for the SRD R370 grant.

However, approval doesn’t automatically mean the payment arrives right away.

Once the application is approved, it typically moves into the payment processing stage. During this stage, the system schedules your payment and assigns a payment date. In other words, approval means you’re eligible — now the system just needs to process the payment.

You can check expected payment times on our SASSA Payment Dates page.

SASSA Approved but No Payment

A lot of applicants see the message “approved but no payment date.” At first glance, it can look like something went wrong. In most cases, though, it simply means the payment is still being prepared.

This usually happens because:

payment batches are still being processed

banking details are under verification

payment scheduling is still underway

Here’s the thing: SRD grants are released in payment batches, so not everyone receives funds at the same time.

Once the system finishes processing your application, the payment date normally appears in your status results.

SASSA Declined Status Meaning

If your status shows declined, it means the system determined that the application does not meet the eligibility requirements for the SRD grant.

Several factors can cause this result. Some of the most common reasons include:

alternative income source identified
UIF benefits detected
government salary detected
identity verification failure

Even if your application is declined, it doesn’t always mean the process is finished. Applicants still have the option to submit an appeal if they believe the decision was incorrect.

Status Declined?

Don't lose hope—you have the right to request a reconsideration.

What to Do if Your SASSA Status Is Declined

If you believe your application was declined by mistake, you can submit a reconsideration request. The appeal process usually works like this:

1

Visit the official SRD reconsideration portal.

2

Enter your South African ID number and phone number.

3

Select the month you want to appeal.

4

Submit the reconsideration request.

After submission, the application is reviewed by the Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals.

This tribunal reviews declined applications independently to ensure applicants receive fair consideration. If the appeal is successful, the grant may still be approved.
